Rubber band fixes tinny sound 5 by .. Westpole (Kent, WA)
I have read that Macally updated this product many months ago (and regrettably didn't change the model number). The newer version has more volume, better battery life, and better sound. Many of the more critical reviews may be from people who bought the first version. My unit has met or exceeded my expectations in every category - when operated with a rubber band on it. (Some of the reviewers may also not have considered that they must turn up the ipod volume.)

Initially the door over the battery compartment was difficult to open. After many operations it is now easy to open, but the result is that the door vibrates giving the unit a tinny sound. I solved this problem by putting a rubber band around the cylinder. (Now I use an appropriately sized O ring.) This stops the vibration and the sound is remarkable for such small speakers. It's certainly not in a class with larger speakers, but is terrific for uses requiring small, portable, battery operated speakers.

I bought the podwave to listen to music on long bike rides. It works great for this. I suspend the unit from the back of my bike helmet and use a headphone extender cable to reach the ipod in my jersey pocket. I can hear the music when the road is empty but can always hear the traffic approach. This is much better than any headphone or earbud solution.

Now that I have the podwave, I find that there are times I prefer it to listening with earbuds. It's easier on the ears.

One last thing is that the podwave works fine with a rechargeable NIMH battery.
